Separation Saturday In The ACC Coastal: Virginia Tech-North Carolina

Virginia Tech @ North Carolina

Sat 3:30 PM ABC

Line: UNC –3, 44.5

Separation Saturday in the ACC is highlighted by a matchup that could significantly shape the Coastal Division. Virginia Tech is coming off a hard fought win over Georgia Tech turning to QB Tyrod Taylor at quarterback to lead the way. North Carolina was impressive on the road last Thursday in blowing out Rutgers.

Keys to the Game

1. Passing Game

Virginia Tech has been anemic with their pass offense this season averaging under 100 ypg and that does not look to change a whole lot with Tyrod Taylor being named the starter. That is too bad because UNC’s defense is poor against the pass allowing 241 yards per game. The team that can improve on their weakness will gain a leg up in this one.

2. North Carolina’s Surprising Defense
Statistically these teams are about equal in total defense and points allowed. Usually, Va Tech has the dominant defense coming into a game, but not necessarily this time. North Carolina's D is allowing points at nearly the same yards per point as Va Tech's are both are around 20 ypp, which is very good. However, on the other side North Carolina’s offense has shown much more power than VT’s. Can UNC’s defense maintain its level of play from their first two games?

North Carolina played Virginia Tech surprisingly tough last year in Blacksburg. I always say you see the big jump in a team from year 1 to year 2 under a new coach and this is Butch Davis' 2nd year at UNC. I like UNC in this game at home and it looks like a lot agree with me as the line has jumped from –1.5 to –3. For Va Tech to pull this one out, they are going to need several big plays from their special teams
