Virginia Tech-Maryland Preview and Prediction
Maryland at Virginia Tech
Thursday 7:30 PM
Line: VT -3
This is a big one in the ongoing ACC race as Maryland travels to Blacksburg hoping to maintain their lead in the Atlantic Division. The Hokies are the only team that controls their own destiny in the Coastal Division.
Keys to the Game:
1. How will Cory Holt play in the spotlight?
Va Tech is down to their third string QB after injuries to Tyrod Taylor and Sean Glennon. It is a lot different for an inexperienced player to come into a game knowing they will start vs having to come in unexpectedly. Holt has had all week to think about him starting this game. Hokies fans hope he isn't over thinking this one.
2. Can Maryland Run Against Hokie Defense?
The Terps are averaging a healthy 167 ypg on the ground. VT is giving up just 118 ypg on the ground. Something has to give here.
3. Turnover Battle
Both of these teams have been good in the turnover margin. The Hokies especially rely on them with their sometimes anemic offense. Actually most of the time it is anemic. Can the fast Hokie defense create turnovers? Can the Terps rattle the young Holt?
The Terps have gone onto the road three times in 2008 and lost two of those. This will be the toughest environment they have faced on the road this season. This Hokie team lost a 10-0 lead last time out against FSU after Taylor and Glennon went out. I have a hard time thinking Holt can come in against an improved Maryland team and win his first start without a bunch of help from the defense with turnovers. I like Maryland and their run game to be able to upset the Hokies.
