What I Am Reading

Haven't posted any links in a while, so here you go. Kind of slow period now with basketball done, spring football mostly done, and the stretch run for baseball still a few weeks away.

North Carolina Final 4 Run Over

North Carolina never really had a chance in their semifinal game with Kansas. Their undoing was what everyone said was their weak spot was all year - defense. The Jayhawks came out out at a torrid pace on offense setting screen after screen on the Tar Heels for easy shots. Meanwhile, Carolina just could not get their shots to fall.

The Tar Heels did make a run in the second half to get it down to 4 points, but the loose balls starting going Kansas' way and the lead was back up to up 10 before you could blink. It is weird how those things work...loose balls, shots that rim out, rebounds off fingertips. When things are going your way you get those. After the run to get back into the game, it seemed like Carolina was getting the same shots as Kansas except the Jayhawks' shots were falling and the Heels' were rimming out. Loose balls would be within reach, only to roll to a Kansas player. Tyler Hansbrough was frustrated all night by double teams. Hansbrough had not seen that kind of size in the ACC .

I have to give Kansas credit. They really impressed me with their overall play on Saturday. I think the championship game is going to be a really, really good one. Two teams who are long, athletic, up tempo, can defend, and score from anywhere on the court. I think if both teams play well, Memphis will win. Kansas will have to depend on their bigs to gain an advantage over the Tigers.

North Carolina Kansas Prediction

Final 4
San Antonio, TX
1. North Carolina vs 1.Kansas 8:47 PM ET
This match up has been in the making since the 2003 Championship Game when after losing to Syracuse,
then Kansas coach Roy Williams uttered the now famous words - "I could give two s&*ts about North Carolina
right now" when asked about taking the vacant Tar Heel position. A few weeks later, Williams made the move to
his alma mater. Just in case you forgot.

Here is why North Carolina will win:
1. They have the best player on the floor - Tyler Hansbrough
2. They have a better PG - Ty Lawson - who can break presses on his own
3. They have the better coach - Roy Williams
4. Kansas' play will reflect their coach Bill Self = tight. He has much more to lose than Roy.
5. UNC played the best of all 4 teams left throughout the Tournament. They played extremely well after the
first weekend, came back after a 4 day layoff and picked up right where they left off. Memphis only
played well last weekend.
6. They can win playing their style (vs Arkansas) or their opponents style (vs Washington State)

How can Kansas win?
1. Play to win, play loose. Don't play like your coaches job is on the line because it's not

2. Get Hansbrough in foul trouble
3. Brandon Rush has the standout performance we have been waiting 4 years for.

I have been very impressed so far with North Carolina and not so impressed with Kansas. The highest seed the
Jayhawks have beaten is a 9 seed and they were outplayed by #10 Davidson last Sunday. The Tar Heels have
too much inside with Hansbrough and too much speed in the backcourt.
North Carolina 86 Kansas 78

Other Semifnal...
I picked UCLA in the beginning and even though Memphis looks very tempting, I will stick with the Bruins... for now.

Final 4 Lines

Lines are up for the Final 4 with no real surprises. Most of the bests come within 24 hrs of the games so it will be interesting to see if the lines move significantly on game day.

Current: Memphis -2.5, -140 vs UCLA +2.5, +120
Open: Memphis -2, -130 vs UCLA +2, +110
Money is moving towards Memphis and who can argue with how they played last weekend. If Memphis plays at that level again then they will be very tough to beat. I think some are concerned with UCLA's ability to score points against a top team.

Current: North Carolina -3.5, -165 vs Kansas +3.5, +145
Open: North Carolina -3, -155 vs Kansas +3, +155
Money is also moving to North Carolina and I agree. Kansas did not impress me last week. I think the pressure on Bill Self works against the Jayhawks.

People love favorites and I expect if the lines are going to move anymore it would be more towards the favorites.

Odds to win NCAA Championship: North Carolina 8-5 Memphis 3-1 Kansas 3-1 UCLA 3-1 These have not moved since opening. I am a little surprised Memphis isn't a 5-2 favorite with how they played last weekend.

Tyler Hansbrough, Kevin Love, and Derrick Rose are the top 3 faves for Final 4 MVP.
