Georgia Tech vs Florida State Prediction

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Florida State Seminoles
Thursday 7PM
TV: ESPNU

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets travel to Tallahassee to face the Seminoles of Florida State in the lone Thursday ACC game this week. The Jackets are coming off their first win of the ACC season against Wake Forest last Saturday. FSU has had a week to digest their last second loss to North Carolina at home on a last second three pointer by the Tar Heels.

Records:

Georgia Tech 10-10, 1-6, 2-5 (away), RPI #134
Florida State 16-5, 3-3, 5-2 (home), RPI #27

Series:

Ga Tech is 6-4 in the last 10 games vs FSU
FSU is 3-2 in the last 5 games at home vs GT

Players to Watch:

Georgia Tech: F Gani Lawal, G Iman Shumpert, C Alade Aminu
Florida State: G Toney Douglas, F Chris Singleton, C Soloman Alabi

What Georgia Tech must do to win...
Paul Hewitt's team has to keep their turnovers down to get their first ACC road win of the year; I will say the magic number is 15 which is how many they had in the win over Wake. The Jackets are not a great shooting team, especially from long range so they will need their bigs (Lawal, Aminu, and Zach Peacock) to get in one on one situations down low. If these guys are able to draw fouls, then they need to hit free throws like they did last Saturday (23-30). This may be a tough feat with 7 footer Alabi down low for the Noles.

What Florida State must do to win...
Toney Douglas needs to have a good game as the guard is the Seminoles only double digit scorer on average. FSU has a very tall team down low which should help against GT's low post presence. Leonard Hamilton needs to reinforce to his guys to let their height do the defending and not foul an improving free throw shooting team. Finally, FSU needs to continue the great defense they have been playing allowing just 38 percent shooting from their opponents a number even the Tar Heels were not able to eclipse.

Prediction

Georgia Tech has struggled under Hewitt on the road nearly every year of his tenure in Atlanta and this year is especially tough. FSU has the height inside to defend Ga Tech's low post guys and force the Yellow Jackets to shoot from outside. I think Tech shows some improvement in this game but still comes out short with a big game from Toney Douglas lifting the Noles.

FSU wins by 7-12 points

Season: 11-12 SU through 2/3

  2. You know I thought during that game that Tech was going to win. Thought maybe we might be seeing something like 2001 when Tech started 0-7 and finshed 7-9.
