ACC Tournament Second Round Previews and Predictions

What else can you expect from the ACC Tournament except the unexpected? Georgia Tech's win over Clemson was the third time in four years that a number 12 seed has beaten the number 5 seed in this Tournament. Now the top four teams take the floor with fresh legs. The two ACC bubble teams are still in it with the opportunity to improve their stock against the conferences best teams.

#8 Virginia Tech Hokies vs #1 North Carolina Tar Heels
Friday 12:00 Noon
TV: Raycom/ESPN2

The Hokies and Tar Heels met just last week with UNC prevailing in Blacksburg. With a number one seed all but wrapped up, I could see Roy Williams resting some starters more than usual in this game especially Ty Lawson. The Hokies have some confidence back now with a convincing win over Miami on Thursday. I think Virginia Tech plays like they are barreling through a wall while North Carolina handles this game with kid gloves knowing the bigger prize lies ahead.

Pick: Virginia Tech

#12 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets vs #4 Florida State Seminoles
Friday 2:30 PM
TV: Raycom/ESPN2

It would not be an ACC Tournament without some big upsets. Georgia Tech played more like they should have been all year in the win over Clemson on Thursday. The Yellow Jackets lost to FSU, their next opponent, by just 5 in Tallahassee this season. One thing bringing them down could be an injury to point guard Iman Shumpert that slowed the freshman late on Thursday. It will be interesting to see who the Toney Douglas vs Lewis Clinch matchup favors because each one is capable of 25 points on a given night. I will take a long and athletic FSU team in a tight one that goes down to the wire.

Pick: Florida State

#7 Maryland Terrapins vs #2 Wake Forest Demon Deacons
Friday 7:00 PM
TV: Raycom/ESPN2

These teams will also meet for the second time in a week with Maryland's NCAA Tournament hopes still riding on the outcome. In that game in College Park, neither team shot the ball very well and Wake Forest won the game at the free throw line hitting 10 of 17 and Maryland shooting just two free throws. Wake also out rebounded Maryland 50-32. The Deacs have a big size advantage on the inside, but the matchup to watch will be Greivis Vasquez vs Jeff Teague. Both teams feed so much off these guys play that the better of the two will likely lead his team to victory.

Pick: Wake Forest

#6 Boston College Eagles vs #3 Duke Blue Devils
Friday 9:30 PM
TV: Raycom/ESPN2

BC dispatched Virginia with relative ease on Thursday night with Duke looking on. The Eagles won the only season meeting by six in Chesnut Hill in mid-February. BC was red hot from the floor hitting 59 percent and winning despite 19 turnovers. Even though they will have nearly 24 hours to rest, I think the late game slot is the hardest to come back from the next day. Duke, with fresh legs, gets off to a good start and keeps BC at arms length until a late rally is held off by the Blue Devils

Pick: Duke

Season: 30-25 SU through 3/12

  1. Looking back on your picks, I like the boldness of your Hokies pick. You should have got that right.
