Maryland-Houston Prediction: Terps Hope To Avoid Upset Bug

Gary Williams should not have too much to be upset about Friday

#4 Maryland vs #13 Houston
Buffalo, NY
9:50 ET

This is kind of an obligatory post as I feel pretty safe in saying Maryland is going to win today. Now that I have fully jinxed them let me tell you why.

First, lets start with the Terrapins coach Gary Williams who has not lost an opening NCAA Tournament game since 1996.

Second, their opponent is only in this Tournament because they caught fire in the conference playoff and specially in the Championship Game. The Selection Committee seeded them a 13 seed with a 15-15 regular season record while seeding regular season champ UTEP (26-6) as a 12. So much for the regular season I guess.

Kelvin Lewis got hot for the Cougars pouring in six three pointers and 28 total points to give Tom Penders' club the Conference USA title.

Vegas has installed the Terps as 9.5 point favorites which is only a half a point less than the largest 4 seed gap Wisconsin has over Wofford. Vandy was a 3 point fav over Murray State and Purdue is just four over Siena.

Guard play is key in the Tournament and Maryland has it. Barring another barrage of 3's from Lewis, I see the Terps pulling away in the second half.

Pick: Maryland over Houston
