The rumored reason for his possible departure is that Grant is tired of being second (or may third behind Spring Football) fiddle in the Alabama Athletic Department. If Georgia Tech was able to match Grant's $1.8 Million salary he would leave.
I really had not considered a name like Anthony Grant in my original coaching candidates because 1) I didn't think Grant would be interested in leaving Tuscaloosa after just two seasons 2) I didn't think Tech had the money to pay for him.
One the second one, Georgia Tech is having to pay former coach Paul Hewitt $120,000 per month over the next five years (around $7.2 Million total). The Yellow Jackets have also been paying former football coach Chan Gailey's buyout the last three years with one more to go. Current football coach Paul Johnson makes about $2.3 Million per season. All of this comes from an athletic department that basically broke even last year.
Hewitt's yearly salary was about $1.3 Million. Georgia Tech has some very wealthy alumni, but the question is will they pony up the additional money needed to afford a guy like Grant?
More importantly from Grant's perspective is would be is he taking a better job at Tech than he has now at Alabama?
I decided to look up some key statistics for each program to see how they stack up. Both schools have good highlights in their basketball history
Which school has the better program - Alabama or Georgia Tech?
